“Welcome to Farm Friday! This is Sam Godwin, 2nd generation apple, pear and cherry grower up in Tonasket, Washington. As you can see, it’s snowing. We’ve had a lot of snow this year. We’ve already had about 30 inches of snow. What do farmers do when it’s too bad to go out and work? We’re going to talk a little bit about that today. This is what I like to think about as the planning season. Farmers love being outside, and in their orchard, and looking at fruit and working. But there’s a less glamorous side of the business that gets taken care of in the winter a lot of times. We figure out things like housing and labor. We go to trade shows. We look at new ideas, and then there’s a bunch of seminars to learn about the latest and greatest from the scientists who are studying things like Little Cherry Disease. We do a bunch of evaluation, and we try to come up with new plans for next year that are going to make things a little bit better on the Family Farm.”
