This week, 3rd generation grower Cass Riggan is here to tell us about food grade wax on apples! People have been using naturally sourced wax to preserve and protect fresh produce for centuries. Today, food grade waxes are regulated by the FDA and are used to keep many different fruits & veggies fresh and free of any unwanted critters. Our growers find JOY in mixing generations of knowledge and up-to-date technology to bring you the best quality apples possible.

Happy Farm Friday I’m Cass, and today we’ll be talking about wax. Did you know, Chinese merchants in the 12th century started using wax to preserve the freshness of their oranges? 800 years later, and we’re doing it for all types of produce. The wax that we apply on our apples is called food grade wax. All the sources of these different types of wax come from trees and resins. The Food and Drug Administration has guaranteed these sources to be safe for human consumption. Not only is it fresher, it keeps in more nutrients, prevents microorganisms from entering the apple and it makes the apple look pretty darn good. Here we have Adriana showing us the three stages of the waxing process. The first is the pre-clean, pre-wax Apple – It’s not very shiny. The middle one is post clean pre-wax and the third one is the post wax apple with a thin layer of wax on the outside so next time you’re enjoying a crisp shiny Apple just remember that wax is a part of what makes that eating experience so enjoyable!
