Welcome back to another Farm Friday with Hawkins Gebbers! Learn why pruning is valuable for our tree structures, fruit growth and nutrition.

“Hey guys, it’s Hawkins. So we’re out here at the end of April and we’re trying to finish up our pruning and today we’re in an early pink lady block. From a very broad perspective pruning any plant is allowing for sunlight, new growth, getting rid of dead wood, inefficient wood, non-fruiting wood. Basically any wood that’s going to hinder our tree from being vibrant, sun lit apple producing structure. Right now you’re looking at a prune tree. A prune tree has fruiting wood, it has sunlight or windows both through the trellis and to each layer of limb, and it creates a tree structure that’s more narrow. Because the narrower the tree structure the more sunlight and the strength of the branches will hold the apple and give it the correct nutrition.”
