“Hey! I’m Kaitlyn Thornton, I’m a fourth generation apple and pear grower from north central Washington and I’m gonna talk to you today about some concorde pears. As a pear grower I think concordes are probably the most underrated piece of fruit out there. They’re one of my favorites. But to be fair I think that you hardly ever get to try them because they’re only in stores from September when we harvest them to December when they finally run out. If you haven’t tried a concorde, they’ve got this kind of longer shape to them. They’re a fairly solid green color. I’m going to rub off the sun protection we’ve got on there and this is what it looks like and it’s got a beautiful what we call fruit finish. Here we’ve got some concorde pears that are all shined up we’ve got that typical green color and on this concorde pear we’ve got those brown spots. I consider these to be like freckles for pears and we call that russeting. The awesome thing about concordes is that you can bake with them, you can eat them raw, they’re a pretty all around pear. As far as eating them raw they are really good crunchy and they’re really good soft but they don’t necessarily have to be soft and deeply ripe to be juicy and sweet. Now you might have noticed that behind me we’ve got these limbs and they’re kind of weighed down. Well that’s what happens when you have a beautiful pear crop is that there’s enough fruit that it kind of weighs those limbs down and causes them to droop, so it’s kind of exciting to see as a grower. We’ve got a beautiful concorde crop coming your way!”
